"Vlisco started in 1846 with a handful of Dutch illustrators who created interpretations of Batik prints to homage the ancient Indonesian design traditions. Java was, and still is, renowned for its intricate details and spirited floral illustrations.
Java fabrics contain up to nine different colors, which are traditionally vivid in style and enriched by the special sheen and soft surface of the fabric.
The process of creating Java fabrics is characterized by its precision. By applying high pressure on engraved and punctured screens and rollers, the ink and dye are rigorously pressed on to the fabrics, enabling the smallest details to be printed."
This particular Java print is printed on a silky soft cotton sateen, with a hint of sheen on the right side. As always, it is made with an extra long-staple cotton and incredibly fine weave. Vlisco works closely with the African couture design community and, as such, new collections come out only a few times per year and once these collection pieces are gone, they're typically gone forever, making items made with these fabrics true collector's items. Vlisco is never sold on rolls or bolts, but only in pre-cut, precious 6-yard (maximum) pieces. The fabric is 47 inches (120 cm) wide, from selvage to selvage. First photo shows one yard of fabric.
All Vlisco designs are done in-house by their team of designers in the Netherlands. Vlisco has many followers but no peers.
